An amazing document. Pros-Astounding performance, and everyone on fire. Recorded over the house system. Sounds like you're standing on stage. Cons- A few spots of messy tape (after "Vittoria") and a few necessary clipped moments where there was a digital error. Short of having a perfect tape-I don't-this is the best I can do. I’m confused. I think Moffo sounds wonderful in the first aria here, and I had read that her later performances - - and certainly her later recordings - - showed the voice in serious disarray. There are a few scoops here, a few unnecessarily forced phrase endings, etc., but nothing terrible. And quite a free lovely, easy top. (The audience obviously didn’t like it as much as I did.)

    Nice early picture of Tucker here at #22:40, this was taped in the house on tape in the audience and I hear a good friend of mine (now deceased yelling bravo!!) He taped everything he could in house back then!

    Tucker, he is the senior singer here, here live at age 56, it is interesting to compare him here and then with his "1960" Brdcst. of the opera from the Met. when he was in his 40's , that was with Bastianini and Tebaldi, which is also on you tube also, or in the 1950's when Tucker sang it also as a young man, of course here he is older but he lasted well with fine technique, which was his foundation always RIP. Richard Tucker -----1913- 1975.

    Very rare live tape of this live performance (Tucker at age 59) here sang the Met. Brdcst. of it just 3 months after this again, in Jan. 1973, but with a different cast, so here we have another live performance taped in the house for total accuracy of sound, wonderful that prompter box posted it. The opera with Tucker, Merrill and Moffo was Studio recorded in 1961 complete by RCA on LP's and later of course CD's This is in very good sound for a live in house tape at the time.

      Nothing? Really ? NOTHING? what about an opera where the singers are terrible. Is that worse that opera in English? Didn't HL Mencken say that opera in English made about as much sense as baseball in Italian? ; ) Didn't people say the same thing about operas in German... and now look where we are.

    • @cliffgaither
      @cliffgaither 2 дні тому

      @paules3437 :: You have valid points. As far as opera in German ... that language has a very different sound and rhythmic pattern. The power of Wagner's operas are not just due to the music, but the upfront impact of that powerful language. What the German language may lack in beauty compared to the French language, it makes up for in the impression and attention it commands when hearing it. English lacks both beauty and power. Hearing L.P. ... she sounds as if she can not really sing ; she seems to be tripping over her own language. There is no trace of her great performances in Italian and definitely not her magnificent vocals from Carmen. What I think doesn't really matter. It is all subjective. I didn't want to offend other opera fans, but this opera wasn't really worthy of opening the "new" Metropolitan and opera fans are like sports fans, except sports fans don't threatened to kill each other 💀. Thank you for taking the time to respond and not trying to find out where I live 😄.

    By 1966, I was a confirmed opera lover and had seen about a hundred performances at the old Met. So, it was a must for me to be at the opening night of the new Met at Lincoln Center. Unfortunately, I was unable to get a ticket, and my usual alternate means of getting into the house were unsuccessful. So, too, in prowling the lobby, I saw there would be no possibility of getting a last-minute-no-show ticket from a patron whose friend canceled at the last minute. Suppressing panic, I saw another means. There were lots of celebrities attending the performance and whenever a celebrity went in, camera lights came on because news organizations were filming. At such moments, I noted that the ticket takers all looked away to catch a glimpse of the celebrity. For this story, it is important to know that the Met, unlike any other theater I knew, used special passes that were given to people as they left the hall to go into the public lobby, usually at intermission, so that they would be able to return later. I noted that, as usual, there were stacks of these passes on the ticket taker’s stands. Being desperate, I saw my chance. Senator Jacob Javits was coming in. I got on the line behind him. Sure enough, as he got to the ticket taker, the camera lights flashed on and, as he passed through, I picked up a pass with my right hand, immediately switching it to my left to then hand it to the ticket taker who simply took it and let me through. That was the one, and only, time I have ever used that method to get into the Met. It was because I was desperate to get into the historic opening night of the new Met, and because I knew this probably wouldn't work going forward without the distractions provided by the cameras and celebrities. - From my book "Reflections from the Audience"

      @promptersbox ugh, this. I mean my main three (Nilsson, Tebaldi, Milanov) or rather 4 (Kirsten). Perhaps you have some stuff outside of the met? I saw the list of one collectors. Three words - enormous. One of a lot of notable recordings - Caniglia's Aida. From 1952.. Can't imagine that. But still, very interesting. But I ask those questions frequently because I want to know. Or maybe there are some real treats - Rysanek's Forza at the MET in 1960 (only 3 times) and the rarity between all - Price's Fanciulla (only 5 times, but reportedly even her siblings/close friends can't find anything).

      It seems there used to be an Il Pirata with Marisa Galvany if you have it or can find it. Also, there was a recital from Carnegie Hall with Licia Albanese where she sang Qui la voce? Which was never a part of her repertoire. Finding these would be wonderful
